JAMES ARTIS('68) passed on May 3rd in Charlotte, NC. The funreal was held on May 8th. James had been in a nursing home for a long period of time. He was age 67 and a member of the class of 1968.
William Ernest Woods (St. Augustine's College's band director) passed away on Feb 27, 2009 in in Charlotte, NC while traveling with the school's band and pep band at the CIAA annual basketball tournament.
LAWRENCE E. SCALES ('34), 94, of 1017 E. Jones St., died peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 following a brief illness. He was born in Mt. Airy, on August 24, 1914, the only child of the late Thomas and Alice Scales. He has been a resident of Raleigh since 1916. He was married to Irene Clark Scales for 67 years. Laurence attended St. Augustine's College in elementary, high school, and college, receiving the high school diploma in 1932 and the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Science in 1934. He was an distinguished life member of the St. Augustine's College National Alumni Association. His career as train porter and mail technician with Seaboard Coastline Railroad spanned over 37 years. A member of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, he was very active in the Laymen's Auxiliary until his illness. Laurence is survived by his wife, daughters, Laurencene S. Murphy of Charlotte, Thomasene S. Howard and Theresa S. Seberry (Charles) of Raleigh; sons, Clark E. Scales (Johnnie) of Athens, GA, Frederick C. Scales of Raleigh; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; cousins and other relatives and friends.
